Staying by the sea near Baltimore in County Cork

Baltimore is a town south west of Skibbereen. Off the coast is a number of small islands. One of the largest of these islands is called Sherkin Island follwed by Cape Clear island.

These islands offer visitors somewhere to explore and have beaches and pubs for refreshments. Sherkin Island and Cape Clear island are reached by a short ferry sail from Baltimore and are a paradise to visit for bird watchers or anyone interested in the rich wildlife of the islands. Here visitors will find islands where seals make their home and bear their young, otters and many more aquatic creatures and mammals. They are also the place to go for kayaking, take boat trips to see whales and dolphins.

Things to do when staying on the coast

Fishing holidays - enjoy a spot of sea fishing from a harbour wall, a beach or from a hired boat out at sea.

Watersports - learn to waterski or surf. The rollers of the Atlantic coast are brilliant for surfing.

Whale spotting - take a boat trip out to sea to spot whales, dolphins and seals during the summer.

Play golf on one of the links courses overlooking the sea. There is no chance of retrieving lost balls here as they fall down a cliff or splash into the ocean.
