Autumnal colours

a taste of Ireland

Halloween - Irish pagan origins - apparently the festival of Halloween began in Ireland. The ancient Celts celebrated 'Samhain' the end of the summer festival. This festival often fell on October the 31st, the day before the Christian festival of 'All Hallows' and became known as 'All Hallows Ev'en' which was over time shortened to Halloween.

Children in Ireland as children in all countries where Halloween has been adopted, go from door to door asking for sweets and playing 'trick or treat'.

County Cork for autumn holidays for couples

The autumn is a great time for older people to go on holiday. The weather can be quite lovely in September and October, children are at school plus prices for cottage accommodation and travel is lower. Average temperatures for September are between 20 and 14 degrees.

The temperatures may not be conducive to swimming in the sea or lazing on beaches, but September, like May, offers a pleasant climate for walking and sightseeing.

Visit Kinsale the gourmet capital of County Cork. The Bollinger Kinsale Gourmet Festival is held in the second week of October each year. There are 'cook offs' in the street, sampling and dining in Kinsale restaurants. Book in advance.

Kinsale is a pretty coastal town with a harbour and well developed tourism. Much is made of the hanging baskets and window boxes that brighten up the streets.
